バイリンガル・マルチリンガル育児は、母国語の発達に悪影響はないのですか？
Tetsu: 結論をまず言いましょう。母国語の発達に悪影響がないとはっきり言えます。これは、本当にみなさんからよく聞かれることですね。日本では、バイリンガル、マルチリンガルを育てることに対して、「日本語がおぼつかないうちに英語を導入すべきではない」という説がまだまだ根強く残っています。この説は、古く信じられていた説ですが、今では様々な幼児言語教育などの研究結果が出て、むしろバイリンガル・マルチリンガル教育は、メリットが多いことがわかってきました。私自身の経験ですが、幼い頃から多言語を学んだおかげで、それぞれの言語が絡み合って、自分の中で言語の根が太くなったイメージを持っています。常に、「じゃあ、これは日本語で何と言う？」という風に考えるし、文法についても単一言語しか知らない人よりもたくさんの引き出しが自分の中にできます。これは、新しく他の言語を学ぶときに、かなりのサポートになりました。私が１０代後半からスペイン語、ポルトガル語、イタリア語、ドイツ語をまなしかし、知っておかなければならないのは、多言語教育は親子ともに取り組む長いマラソンのようなものだということです。「日本語が遅れた」「日本語と英語をごちゃまぜに喋っている」と途中で投げ出してしまっては、
