テッドは製薬会社時代のアメリカ・ボストン支社の同僚。

同じオフィスで働いたわけではないものの、グローバル事業を通じて、一緒に仕事をした仲。そんなテッドからのメッセージ。

 

Tetsu Yung is truly a citizen of the world.  Working with him in an international pharmaceutical company, I was impressed with his ability to work successfully across borders (geographical, cultural and corporate) to improve our business.  Skilled in both science and business, Tetsu played an important role in developing and executing corporate strategy, aligning technical units toward larger objectives.  Tetsu's language skills were very important for his success, as we had operations in Japan, China, the United States and Europe at the time.  The ability to work well with groups of people whose backgrounds, areas of specialty and language differ is rare and valuable.  I have heard Tetsu ascribe his ability along these lines to his upbringing, and especially his early exposure to learning many languages.  I would agree that language can help a person grow in many ways beyond the ability to communicate, but this is only part of Tetsu's story.  His creativity, optimism, curiosity and willingness to help others couple well with his ease in working with various cultures and languages to create a whole new ability.  It is not surprising to me that his first book is about sharing his life experiences with the intent of helping others.  I am sure that readers will find the book entertaining, insightful and ultimately useful in helping to prepare children for the challenges that are common to our ever shrinking world. 

 

テツはまさに本物の地球人と言えます。彼と一緒にグローバル製薬企業で働きましたが、私はいつも感心させられてきました。彼はあらゆる境界（地理、文化、企業）を越え、うまくビジネスをやってのけるスキルの持ち主です。サイエンスだけでなくビジネスのセンスも持ち合わせていたおかげで、彼は企業戦略の発展・実行、また様々な専門部署が同じ大きな目標に向かうために、中心的役割を果たしました。テツの多言語能力は、彼の成功には欠かせないものだったと思います。というのも、我々は当時、日本、中国、北米、ヨーロッパに事業部がありましたから。バックグラウンドも、専門分野も、さらに母国語までも違う人々とうまくコミュニケーションを取りつつ一緒に仕事をする能力というのは、誰もが持ち合わせてはおらず、本当に貴重です。彼は、このたぐいまれなる能力を、自身の幼少期、特に早くからの多言語教育のおかげだと考えています。コミュニーション能力だけでは至らない部分を、多言語能力があらゆる面で助けてくれるというのは一理あるでしょう。でも、そういった点は、テツのストーリーのほんの一部にすぎません。彼には創造性、楽観主義、好奇心、積極的に他人に手を差し伸べる優しさが備わっています。その彼の数々の特徴が、彼のユニークな文化・言語背景をもって、その「たぐいまれなる能力」を獲得するのに役立ってきたと思います。

彼から本を書いたと連絡をもらったとき、私は全く驚きませんでした。彼の貴重な人生経験を１冊目の本にまとめて、それを出版するなんて、彼らしいと思いました。

彼の本は、多くの読者にとってただ読んでも面白く、子育ての参考になること間違いなしです。
